Travel tip for Rome: Get the earliest tours possible if you don't want to be drowning in humans. Taking that advice, we took off for our Colosseum tour way early than one would normally want to wake up for vacation. On the walk there, we happened to notice the sun aligning perfectly with the Colosseum windows. After doing some backtracking for the perfect framing, we did manage to make the tour. But it couldn't live up to this view.

The Colosseum emerges from a blazing Roman sunrise in full silhouette, the ancient amphitheater's two-thousand-year-old arches glowing against a sky of deep amber, copper, and violet that sweeps dramatically overhead in long feathered streaks. A nearly empty road leads straight toward it through a corridor of construction hoardings decorated with Roman imagery, a small cluster of early pedestrians walking directly into the spectacle ahead, entirely unbothered by the fact that they are approaching one of the greatest buildings ever constructed. A street lamp flares in a perfect starburst at middle distance, adding one more point of light to an image already operating at full atmospheric capacity.

The honest presence of the construction barriers and the city infrastructure surrounding the Colosseum gives this image something most landmark shots deliberately avoid — the real lived texture of Rome as a functioning modern city that simply happens to contain an ancient wonder within its daily commute. That tension between the eternal and the contemporary is exactly what makes this print genuinely compelling rather than merely beautiful.
